JA Makubetsu

Here we gather the largest harvest of Inca no Mezame potatoes in Hokkaido. The bright deep yellow-colored potato has a smooth texture. Its characteristic taste resembles chestnuts and sweet potatoes.
[Wanenjo] Don’t be surprised! It is a new variety from Makubetsu. Have you ever seen a hairless white Chinese yam? It is called “Wanenjo.” This rare Chinese yam happened to be found in a fruit-sorting room in Makubetsu. Although Chinese yam is normally characterized by fibrous roots emerging from countless pores on its surface, Wanenjo has almost no pores or roots, and the peel is smooth and white. Makubetsu is famous as a Chinese yam-growing area, but had never seen this variety before. Statistically the probability of finding it is one in several 100 million. It is just a “miracle Chinese yam.” After careful testing and propagation of that one Chinese yam, it was finally registered as the “Wanenjo Makubetsu No.1″ variety. This Chinese yam is juicy and has a fruit-like sweetness. The characteristics of Wanenjo are its juicy texture and its sweet and elegant flavor. With its smooth peel, you can easily cook and eat the Chinese yam whole. Many people give Wanenjo as gifts thanks to its high-quality and elegant appearance.

JA Satsunai

Naganegi (a long variety of welsh onion) is another taste from Makubetsu.
[Etto Negi, overwintering welsh onion]
It stores the taste from the earth under the snow. In the Satsunai district, some farmers make Etto Negi, which is shipped in the early spring, in addition to normal Naganegi, which is marketed in autumn. Etto Negi means negi that has overwintered under the snow for a season. While resting in this way, it matures with increasing softness and deepened sweetness. Near the shipping season, producers set up plastic tunnels on the surface of the snow, so that the snow will melt faster. Several tens of thousands of Naganegi were planted on the fields, but harvesting has to be done manually. It has roots deep under the ground and it is difficult to gather it at once; therefore, producers change the timing of tunneling to figure out a good way for stable shipment.

JA Churui

Yurine (edible lily bulbs) grow under the ground for three years. With its straight and elegant appearance, Churui-grown yurine are of high quality. In Hokkaido, a major yurine-producing center, we are proud of this one with the highest quality. Production of yurine in Churui started during the middle 30s of the Showa era (1955-65). This place may not be ideal for growing yurine in terms of climate, but we have taken on the challenge of growing new products with high profitability. When one puts all efforts in, one can create good quality products as a result. Based on that idea, Churui-grown yurine have earned its present reputation. Pure white yurine has a soft and appetizing texture, mild sweetness and plenty of nutrients. It is rich in folic acid, which is essential for the growth of the fetus, so this vegetable is suitable for pregnant women. Most yurine are exported to the Kansai region, but you can buy it at Sai-no-Yakata Vegeta at an affordable price and you can try its elegant taste at some restaurants and Michinoeki (roadside station) in Churui.
